Dear Sisters and Brothers:
When I climbed into the AFSCME Health and Safety van, currently referred to as the Midwest Disaster relief van – I had no idea what was in store for me. The amount of devastation to the state this spring is unimaginable to the naked eye.
Our first stop in Cedar Falls yielded members who had been affected by the Parkersburg tornado and the flooded streets of Waterloo, Cedar Falls and surrounding communities. The relief on their faces to see their Union stepping up to the plate was heartwarming. Traveling to Iowa City and Cedar Rapids was no different – members who came by to seek assistance and ask for help were visibly emotional about the work their Union was taking on. Des Moines members stopped in after work or on leave from their employment to thank the Union for its work.
We will continue to visit our members in cities such as Burlington, Marshalltown, and Davenport and back to the Waterloo area-we will go where ever it takes to get to our members and to offer our assistance. Armed with donations from AFSCME International and others, a relief staff from AFSCME International and Council 61 and volunteers will be available to help our members. This takes time and of course it takes money-we need your help-as soon as possible. You can click on the relief fund button: Relief Fund and participate in this major undertaking. The International Union is also seeking donations nationwide at www.afscme.org. We will also be collecting school supplies for children of disaster victims-knowing that comes later this summer our members will still need our help.
We are working hard to let our members know we care-we hope you will help us too. Gas prices, housing costs and food prices are stretching everyone’s budget but if you could see the devastation firsthand you would not hesitate to help. Thanks for being such generous and caring members of a first rate organization. Together we will help our members bounce back.
In solidarity,
Danny Homan, President |
