AFSCME Iowa Locals Bring Holiday Cheer (2013)

AFSCME Iowa locals take part in charitable activities throughout the year and especially so during the holiday season. AFSCME Iowa Council 61 has been involved in Toys for Tots in the KCCI viewing area since 2011 and has been a major sponsor since 2012. Across the state, AFSCME Iowa locals participated in Toys for Tots and other charitable causes in their communities. Below is a sampling of some of the holiday donations and activities conducted by AFSCME Iowa Council 61 locals in 2013:

AFSCME Local 212 (Sioux City) donated $1,000 to Mr. Goodfellow, a charity that assists underprivileged kids in the Siouxland area.

AFSCME Local 2990 (Woodward Resource Center) held a community Thanksgiving Dinner for everyone in the community, including those who have to work on Thanksgiving or cannot afford a Thanksgiving meal.

AFSCME Local 1068 (Howard County Secondary Roads, Howard County Dispatchers, City of Cresco employees, and Howard-Winneshiek School Bus Drivers) donated $250 to HoCA (Howard Cancer Association) and $250 to Dollars for Scholars for Howard-Winneshiek Schools and $250 to Dollars for Scholars for Riceville Schools.

AFSCME Local 2985 (Iowa Medical and Classification Center) donated $4,500 to Toys for Tots in Johnson County.

AFSCME Local 2659 (University of Northern Iowa) donated $2,500 in toys to Toys for Tots in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area.

AFSCME Local 451 (Iowa Correctional Institution for Women and Newton Correctional Facility) donated $5,000 to Toys for Tots.

AFSCME Local 3450 (Capitol Complex) made a donation of $1,238 to Toys for Tots and took part in the South Central Iowa Federation of Labor Food Baskets project.

AFSCME Local 1868 (Polk County) donated $1,000 worth of toys to Toys for Tots took part in the South Central Iowa Federation of Labor Food Baskets project.

AFSCME Local 3006 (Sioux City Area) supported the local food bank.

AFSCME Local 2987 (Independence Mental Health Institute) donated $500 to the local food bank and $500 to Operation Santa Claus in Independence.

AFSCME Local 3289 (Community Based Corrections):

  • Chapter 1 donated to Salvation Army in Waterloo, NE Iowa Food Bank,  Ed Thomas Faith Foundation, Project HOPE, NAOMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness.
  • Chapter 5 donated to South Central Iowa Federation of Labor-Holiday food baskets.  
  • Chapter 6 donated to South TAMA County food pantry and HACAP food reservoir.
  • Chapter 7 donated to the Davenport Salvation Army, The Center in Davenport, and Winnie’s wishes.
  • The entire local donated two bags of toys worth about $100.00 to Toys for Tots.

AFSCME Local 12 (University of Iowa) gave $250 to the Homeless Children’s Trust. Around the holidays, the Trust provides gift cards to homeless families and throws a holiday party for homeless children. AFSCME members volunteered at the events and the entire program is run by AFSCME Local 12 staff Mary Larew.

AFSCME Local 183 (Johnson County, Iowa City, and Coralville) made a $500 donation to the North Liberty Food Bank, a $500 donation to the Crisis Center of Johnson County, and a $250 donation to the Homeless Children’s Trust. Local 183 also donated to Toys for Tots.

AFSCME Local 3011 (Davenport Area) made donations of $250 each to Scott County Humane Society, Bridging the Gap (assists local homeless veterans), Red Cross, Friendly House, and Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

AFSCME Local 3016 (Council Bluffs Area) donated $350 to Toys for Tots.

AFSCME Local 3861 (Central Iowa Water & Public Works) made donations to the Animal Rescue League, the John L. Lewis Museum, and the South Central Federation of Labor food baskets. Members collected a full box of toys for Toys for Tots and donated $190 in cash to Toys for Tots.

AFSCME Local 2998 (DOT District II) donated about $500 worth of toys to their local Toys for Tots.

AFSCME Locals 35 (Capitol Complex – Blue Collar), 231 (Linn County), 2023 (SE Polk & Colfax Mingo Community School District), 2051 (Prairie Meadows), 2990 (Woodward Resource Center), 2997 (DOT District I) also made monetary and/or toy donations to Toys for Tots.

AFSCME Local 2840 (Jasper County) donated two food baskets to the Salvation Army in Newton and one gift basket each to two women’s shelters in Jasper County.
