AFSCME Iowa Council 61 - Every Day. Everywhere. Making Iowa Better.

Profile: Jeff Davis (AFSCME Local 35)

BACKGROUND:

Jeff is a Painter for the Iowa Department of Administrative Services at the Capitol Complex. He helps make sure that buildings on the Capitol Complex are properly maintained and look professional. He has been a Painter for eight years and a state employee since 1989.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY: ZA-GA-ZIG SHRINE

Jeff has been a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine (commonly known as the Shriners) in Altoona, IA for over seven years. The Shriners support the Shriners Hospitals for Children, a network of twenty-two pediatric specialty hospitals in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Shriners Hospitals provide treatment regardless of a child’s family’s ability to pay.

Jeff is involved with three major projects with the Shriners. He is president of his shrine’s Hot Rods Club. The Hot Rods Club puts on car shows that raise funds for the Shriners Hospitals and assistance (such as transportation) for the families of children treated at Shriners facilities.

Jeff is a roadrunner who provides transportation to patients (Shriners kids) and their families to the Shriners Hospital in the Twin Cities.

Jeff is also a hospital dad. Hospital dads help Shriners kids and their families by helping resolve issues that arise and by being a friend to the kids and their families.

WHY HE VOLUNTEERS—IN HIS OWN WORDS:

“I am a Shriner because I know that we make a difference for kids who are struggling with illness. I have seen parents’ sense of relief after being told the Shriners will provide medical care for their children that they could not otherwise afford. I have seen how hospital dads bring smiles to the faces of kids who are in a fight for their lives. I know my volunteer work is helping improve the lives of families who are struggling with one of the most difficult situations imaginable.”
