AFSCME Iowa Council 61 - Every Day. Everywhere. Making Iowa Better.

Profile: Janet Goode (AFSCME Local 3450)

BACKGROUND:

Janet is a Senior Retirement Compliance Officer with IPERS (Iowa Public Employees Retirement System). Janet communicates with IPERS covered employers to make sure they are properly withholding and making IPERS contributions. Her work protects the taxpayer by making sure IPERS contributions are properly set aside and protects the retirements of Iowa’s public employees.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY: SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

Janet Goode has been an active volunteer through her church for almost forty years. When her children were young, she volunteered at Christ The King in Des Moines. After her children were grown, she moved and started attending church at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Des Moines.

About fifteen years ago, a request for volunteers to help clean the church was put out by St. Anthony’s to its parishioners. Janet stepped up to volunteer and soon became involved in many more church activities, including the Society of St. Vincent De Paul.

As a volunteer for the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, she regularly volunteers for their twice monthly events where they give out food to families in need. She helps package up the food and assists families in loading the food.

Janet also helps plan and prepare the meals that St. Anthony’s provides to the Catholic Worker House, which feeds Iowans in need. She also takes part in charity runs to benefit the fight against breast and ovarian cancer. She was motivated to get involved in these runs by one of her coworker’s fight against ovarian cancer.

WHY SHE VOLUNTEERS—IN HER OWN WORDS:

“I like to help people. When I’ve talked to those who benefit from the work of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, I hear about how the Society’s assistance really helps their family out during times of struggle.”
