AFSCME Iowa Council 61 - Every Day. Everywhere. Making Iowa Better.

Profile: Jeverna Mulligan (AFSCME Local 2749)

BACKGROUND:

Jeverna Mulligan is the First Cook at West High School in Waterloo. She helps prepare 1500 meals a day for West High students as well as additional meals for two other schools. She has been a Waterloo Schools employee for twenty-six years.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY: COMMUNITY THEATHER VOLUNTEER, GENEALOGY VOLUNTEER, & DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

About ten years ago, while attending a show at the Waterloo Community Playhouse, Jeverna noticed that they were selling store bought snacks during intermission. Jeverna volunteered to bake snacks for sale so that the playhouse could make a fundraising profit on intermission snacks. She has continued to do this for all of their productions.

Around the same time, a friend of hers at church who was active in the Cedar Falls Community Theater mentioned he was looking for ushers to volunteer in that theater’s shows. Jeverna stepped up to volunteer and continues to be an usher.

Genealogy has long been a passion for Jeverna. Her genealogy research into her family led to her joining the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The DAR conducts many service projects in areas ranging from historical preservation to literacy promotion. She received a Community Service Award from DAR in 2013.

Jeverna is a contributor to Findagrave.com: she photographs grave sites all across Iowa and posts the information to the internet. She does this as a way to say thank you to others whose grave site research in other states has assisted her genealogy research.

Jeverna also volunteers for First Presbyterian in Cedar Falls, helps with Meals on Wheels, and assists with the Back Pack Program for the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.

WHY SHE VOLUNTEERS—IN HER OWN WORDS:

“Giving back is important. Community theater has brought so much joy to my life and I am glad to help support it. Findagrave.com was immensely helpful to me in my genealogy research, so my contributing to the site is a way to pay it forward.”
