We Are Your Neighbors: Dorothy Burt, Cedar Falls, Local 2659

I was raised and have lived in the Cedar Valley for nearly all of my life. I met and married my husband Stacy here and we are raising four children together with our fifth baby due in March and the oldest a freshman in college. We have always been active in our children’s schools (Price Laboratory School, Orchard Hill Elementary, Peet Junior High and Cedar Falls HS) and support them by attending their sporting events and school related activities, including girl scouts and boy scouts. We attend Orchard Hill Church in Cedar Falls.

When I began working for UNI in January of 1996 I was a Secretary II in the Out-of-State/International Student Teaching Program for two years before transferring to Price Lab School (PLS). I thoroughly enjoyed working with our young students and their parents throughout my ten years at PLS. I performed many tasks from lunch duty which put me in direct contact with the students, to answering the phones and assisting students/families in the office, to tracking tuition and helping pay coaches for sporting events. Two years ago I began working on the main campus of UNI in the Psychology Department as a Clerk III, helping our undergraduate with registering for classes and assisting with graduate students’ applications.

I have been the primary breadwinner since my husband had his second brain tumor removed in September of 2009 as he is no longer able to work and his employer has terminated him. Without the support of my employer, co-workers, my union (who adopted our family last Christmas), family and friends, it would be really tough on us. Further, I need the flexibility to take him and the kids to doctor’s appointments and my supervisor has been great working around my schedule when I cannot make appointments that are outside my working hours. I am fortunate to work for the University of Northern Iowa and highly value my job.
